The job
Work duties include feeding, watering, herding, penning, observing cattle for signs of fear or distress, monitoring herd for health issues, give vaccinations, assist with birthing and caring for calves. Regularly assess the body condition of cattle (body condition scoring). Care for, saddle and ride horses used in herding cattle. Maintain quiet calm demeanor working around cattle in close quarters (cattle pens and facilities). Recognize typical signs that will indicate parturition in cows or heifers. Make sure that all birthing pens, chutes, and calving stalls are clean, dry, strong, safe, and functioning correctly; medicine chest has all things necessary and other items that may be wanted. Be familiar with birthing protocol plan of what to do, when to do it, who to call for help, and how to know when help is needed. May assist to castrate, apply ID tags, brand. Unload and store feed and supplies. Perform general farm labor jobs: maintenance on farm equipment (clean, oil, repair); repair fences; repair farm buildings (sheds, barns, etc.); muck stalls etc., keep work areas and electric fence areas clean and free from debris. Able to operate a side by side (ATV, UTV), small tractor with loader, and a large row crop tractor.
Housing: Employer-provided (including mobile or range)
Meals: Employer housing (group housing with shared kitchens and common areas, separate sleeping and bath areas) has free kitchen facilities for the workers that will enable them to prepare meals. Kitchen is furnished with stove, refrigerator, storage cabinets, food storage containers, cooking utensils, pots and pans, sinks, hot and cold water, cleaning supplies, and dishes. Washer and dryer are furnished. Workers are offered free transportation at least once a week to bank and to stores where they can purchase groceries and personal articles. Licensed drivers will be provided by employer for transportation to and from housing to job site and stores as necessary. Outside working hours, workers are allowed to consult key service providers and to meet with them in employer-furnished housing. Workers may invite and accept guests to their employer-furnished housing. Workers are equally responsible for cleaning housing and surrounding grounds on a weekly basis.
Transport: Employer will reimburse the worker cost for the transportation, subsistence and lodging from the worker’s home to the worksite. Employer will reimburse an employee’s inbound transportation, subsistence, lodging expenses in the first workweek to the extent that the costs would bring the worker wages below the FLSA minimum wage. The company may conduct criminal background checks post hire at the employer's expense. 2-months experience in general ranching activities. Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. Able to perform all job duties. Able to operate a side by side (ATV, UTV), small tractor with loader, and a large row crop tractor. All tools, supplies and equipment will be provided at no cost to workers. A valid drivers license is required. The majority of the workday is spent standing or walking long distances to check fences. Work is performed outdoors and involves exposure to sun, rain, heat, cold, insects and other natural elements.
