The job
Monitor and maintain grain storage bins throughout the winter season, checking temperature and moisture sensors to detect spoilage, hot spots, or insect infestation; Operate aeration fans and control systems to regulate airflow and temperature within grain bins, adjusting settings based on weather conditions and grain condition; Climb bins and use probes or sampling equipment to pull grain samples from various depths for quality testing; Operate grain augers, conveyors, and bucket elevators to move grain between bins, trucks, and rail cars for shipment or further storage; Perform bin turning and grain transfer operations to equalize temperature and prevent moisture migration within stored grain; Inspect bins, roofs, and structures for leaks, damage, or pest entry points, and perform minor repairs as needed; Apply approved grain protectants or fumigants under supervision to control insects and mold in stored grain; Operate and maintain grain drying equipment, adjusting airflow and temperature to bring grain to safe storage moisture levels; Remove crusted, spoiled, or out-of-condition grain from bins, including manual shoveling and use of grain vacuums in confined bin spaces; Perform confined-space entry procedures to inspect, clean, and repair the interior of empty or partially empty bins; Sweep and clean bin floors, walls, and unload systems to remove residual grain and prevent cross-contamination between grain lots; Maintain accurate records of bin inventory, grain movement, temperatures, and moisture readings for reporting to supervisors; Load outbound grain shipments onto trucks or rail cars, ensuring correct weights and documentation; Perform routine maintenance on bin unload systems, augers, fans, and drying equipment, including greasing, belt replacement, and minor mechanical repairs; Shovel snow and clear ice from bin access points, walkways, and equipment to maintain safe winter working conditions; Perform winter-specific sanitation of bin interiors and unload equipment between grain lots to prevent contamination and mechanical buildup; Remove and dispose of grain identified as spoiled or out-of-condition during winter storage monitoring, and update inventory records to reflect losses and transfers; Report structural issues, equipment malfunctions, or grain condition concerns to supervisors immediately.
Work schedules may vary, and employees may be assigned to rotating shifts, including evening or weekend work as needed. Duties may change during the workday depending on crop conditions, weather, and needs. Workers will perform a variety of general farm labor tasks as assigned, consistent with the job description and within the certified hours. Workers may not be required to work for more than the number of hours specified in the Job Order for a workday, or on the worker's day of religious observance or federal holidays.
Housing: Employer-provided (including mobile or range)
Meals: In accordance with departmental regulations at 20 CFR 655.135, the employer agrees as part of the Application for Temporary Employment Certification and job offer that it will abide by each and every requirement set forth in its regulation. Employees have access to a grocery store located near the residence and are provided transportation to purchase supplies as needed. Housing is free and completely furnished with convenient cooking and kitchen facilities.
Transport: If not previously advanced or otherwise provided, the employer will reimburse workers for reasonable costs (i.e., most economical and necessary) incurred for inbound transportation (airline, bus, or private van) and subsistence costs once the worker completes 50% of the work contract period. Upon completion of the work contract, the employer will either provide, arrange, and/or pay for reasonable costs for the worker’s return transportation and daily subsistence.
