The job

Prepare the soil for the preharvest, harvesting, and post-harvesting of white edible mushrooms, baby bellas and portabellas. This farm operation mainly cultivates and harvests these products from October to July. A mushroom picker is responsible for carefully harvesting, sorting, and packaging mushrooms on farms or in climate-controlled indoor growing facilities. Duties include selecting and picking ripe mushrooms by hand at the proper stage of growth using careful twisting or cutting motions to prevent damage, inspecting and grading mushrooms for quality, size, and ripeness, and discarding any damaged, over-ripe, or deteriorated product. Workers will weigh, sort, and package mushrooms into designated containers for distribution, clean and sanitize work areas, tools, racks, and equipment, and follow all food safety, hygiene, and good agricultural practices requirements. Workers may also assist with bed preparation, planting mushroom spores, watering crops, loading containers for transport, and performing general farm labor and other agricultural activities as assigned. Most workdays are spent on one's feet with constant movement throughout the production areas. Workers must be able to stand, walk uphill and downhill, sit, squat, kneel, crouch, bend from the waist, push, pull, reach, lift, and carry items weighing between 5 and 75 pounds. Driving and operating passenger vehicles and farm equipment may be required. Workers are expected to possess the skills necessary to perform the duties associated with mushroom production and must adhere to all safety rules and operational procedures as instructed by the supervisor. Care must be taken when handling tools, equipment, and produce to avoid injury or product damage. Operational specifications may change throughout the season due to crop or market conditions, and workers will be expected to follow daily instructions and perform a variety of assigned tasks. This itinerary is subject to change due to crop maturity, weather, growing conditions, disease factors, labor availability, packing-house delivery schedules, and market conditions. Workers will rotate days off. All workers will be guaranteed at least 44 hours of work per week and one day off per week. Daily work assignments, crew assignments, and work location will be determined by the employer or designated employees according to operational needs. Instructions and close supervision will be provided to ensure proper task performance and quality standards. The employer will comply with all federal, state, and local safety requirements. The worker may be requested, but not required, to work up to 12 hours per day and/or on federal holidays and weekends depending on production needs, weather conditions, and crop maturity. The manager or supervisor will notify workers at the end of the workday of any changes to the anticipated start time or hours of work for the following day. Regular attendance during scheduled work hours and throughout the work period is expected. Unsatisfactory attendance, including reporting late, excessive requests to leave before the end of the workday, failure to comply with housing or transportation regulations, or similar conduct, may result in disciplinary action. Providing services to other farmers outside the scope of the H-2A visa will result in immediate contract termination. Workers must notify their manager or supervisor at least one day before the start of the workday if they do not expect to report on time. Further information regarding the Employer's Attendance Policy is provided in the Employee Handbook.
