The job
Employees will maintain healthy beehives and manage honeybee colonies. Duties will include feeding and treating bees as needed; assembling beehives; inserting honeycomb containing bees into beehives; and placing hives in orchards, clover fields, or near other sources of nectar and pollen.
Employees will inspect and maintain colonies, remove parasites such as wax moth larvae, and remove vermin such as birds and mice. They will destroy excess queen bee cells when necessary to prevent colony division through swarming, replace queen bees, divide colonies when necessary, and replace old or damaged honeycombs.
Employees will also assist in producing queen bees and harvesting honey. Honey harvesting duties include removing honeycombs, uncapping harvested honeycombs, and extracting honey using appropriate tools and equipment.
The work may involve heavy lifting, including lifting honey supers and equipment weighing approximately 40 pounds, as well as frequent bending while inspecting, treating, and feeding bees. Employees may work longer hours during warmer months, outdoors in variable weather conditions, and occasionally at night as required by seasonal beekeeping operations.
The employer will provide protective equipment, including gloves and protective beekeeping suits, as well as bee smokers and other necessary hive tools.
The employer will comply with applicable California Agricultural Employment Order No. 14-2001 and all applicable federal and state H-2A employment requirements, including the applicable Adverse Effect Wage Rate requirements.
